Apple’s newest OS, 10.5 Leopard, comes chalk-full of fun and undocumented features and with just a little bit of digging you and I are going to expose a couple today. This particular tip is very easy to follow along and takes us into very familiar territory; OS X’s Screensaver Preference Pane.

First we need to select one of the image screensavers, an iPhoto album or we can choose a specific folder of images to display. For the purposes of this example I will use one of the default Apple screensavers, Beach, but again feel free to use any set of images you like.

Next, draw your attention to the lower left corner of the preview viewport. By default we’re set to the traditional ‘One-at-a-time’ screensaver that we’ve been used to seeing since the beginning of OS X, but in 10.5 Apple has added 2 new, and very fun additions to the pile; You guessed it, Collage and Mosaic Display Styles..

The Collage style will drop one image at a time randomly into place each overlapping the next, leaving you with a very attractive Collage of your favorite images. Within the ‘Options…’ you may choose from Classic (Simple Image) or Annotated Mode (Labelled and Dated).

The Mosaic style will scan your entire iPhoto library the first time it loads, building a color-coded database which enables it to display a single image made up of hundreds of other photos. Within the ‘Options…’ are settings for zoom speed as well as how many rows of images to make one Mosaic. Click the image below for a better look or if you’ve been following along at home, you’re probably already enjoying this ‘insanely great’ new feature for your self.
